Lumir “Curly” Klimes, 87, of 2903 F Avenue N.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Ely, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010, in St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 10:00 a.m., Friday, October, 22, 2010, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor J. Richard Ernst. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, October 21, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial: Sulek Cemetery, rural Shueyville, Iowa, with military honors by American Legion Hanford Post #5.
Survivors include his wife, Anna; daughters, Linda Sellers (Richard) Drake of Monticello and Janice Stone Michel of Waunakee, Wisconsin; granddaughters, Anita Sellers of Waunakee, Wisconsin and Hollee Stone (Thomas) McInnis of Neenah, Wisconsin; great grandchildren, Berkley McInnis and Jack McInnis; and several nephews and nieces, Barbara Dietz (Donald) Hennings, Charles (Twila) Dietz, Raymond (Mary) Dietz, Larry Klimes, Darlene Jones, Shirley Kurth, Richard Klimes and Janelle Sanchez. Also surviving are step grandchildren, Melinda McElmeel and Richard Drake, Jr.; and step great grandchildren, Alexandra and Haley McElmeel.
Lumir was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Klimes, Jr. and Emil Klimes; sister, Sadie Klimes Dietz; son-in-law, Jeffrey Michel; nephews, Laverne Klimes and Carl Klimes.
Born September 22, 1923, on a farm where Rockwell Collins hanger is now located at the Cedar Rapids airport, Lumir was the son of George and Clara (Schultz) Klimes, Sr. Lumir served his country from February 23, 1945 to December 23, 1946, in the Army-Air Corps during WWII. He was stationed in the Phillipines and Korea. Lumir received the Asiatic/Pacific Medal and Good Conduct Medal. On January 15, 1947, Lumir was united in marriage to Anna Clara Louvar in the Presbyterian Church in Osceola, Arkansas.
He was a farmer and worked for Colonial Bakery, FMC Corporation and was a security guard.
Lumir was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post #5.
His hobbies were investments, reading, music, playing the trumpet and raising pumpkins.
A memorial fund has been established in Lumir’s memory.
