Ludmila A. Balik, 96, a resident of Mercy Halmar Residential Care, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, October 23, 2008, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 27, 2008, at St. Matthews Church, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the mass at the church. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include her children, Mary (David) English of Cedar Rapids, Dan (Barbara) Balik of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Bob (Deborah) Balik of Fort Collins, Colorado; 4 grandchildren, Joani (Bret) Thoralson, Christopher (Jeri) English, Brent (Leesa) Balik and Jill (Art) Powell; and 3 great-grandchildren, Jason, Cory, and Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis, a son, Ronald, an infant son, Donald, grandson, Nathaniel, two brothers, and one sister.
Ludmila was born August 13, 1912, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Kula) Bisinger , in Independence, Iowa. She married Louis J. Balik on November 3, 1937. He died in 1986. Ludmila worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell and U.S. West for 34 years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church for over 50 years.
