Loyd R. Shaffer, 66, of 2145 A Ave., Marion, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, following a short illness. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. The family invites friends to share their memories of Loyd at 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

Survivors include his wife, Marty of Marion; two sons, Timothy and Thaddeus (Staci), both of Marion; siblings, Gustal (Fred) of California, Dale (Jim) of Marion, LaNora (Dale) of Cedar Rapids, and Boyd (Karen) of Waverly; three grandchildren, Andrea, Jacob, and William; nieces and nephews, John and Lindsey, Darrick, Shantro, and Christa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Loyd was born February 23, 1942, the son of Guthrie “Bud” and Betty Jane (Smith) Shaffer in Albia. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1960. He was an athlete and coach at Coe College, graduating in 1965. He married Martha Keilty in Downer’s Grove, Illinois, and began teaching and coaching at Marion High School, all in August of 1965. He taught Physical Education and Biology for thirty-two years before retiring in 1997. He was the head varsity wrestling coach for twenty-five years, varsity defensive coordinator for the football team for twenty-seven years, and assistant girl’s varsity track coach for ten years. Loyd was a substitute teacher for eleven years following his retirement. He enjoyed his grandkids, his horses, and his boats.

Loyd was a member of Friends of the Park in Marion and was a past member of the Coaches Association of Iowa. He was inducted into the Marion High School Hall of Fame and was to receive an outstanding lifetime achievement award at the Love of Marion reception on February 19, 2009.

Loyd’s generosity will live on through his last gift; the gift of life through organ donation.

A memorial fund has been established in Loyd’s memory.
