Lowell H. Palmer, 79, of Marion, formerly of Hiawatha, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion with a vigil service beginning 6:30 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors by American Legion Post #298 of Marion.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 56 years, Mary; children, Daniel (Vicki) Palmer of Dyersville, Doug (Jolene) Palmer of Marion, Janet Peck of Marion, Julie Palmer of Marion, and Michael (Jennifer) Palmer of St. Louis Park, MN; 15 grandchildren, Stacy (Dan), Emily, Ben, Abby, Dustin, Ashley, Nicole (James), Justin, Bobby, Christopher, Josh, Matt, Eric, Kevin, and Isaac; 3 great-grandsons, Jacob, Gus, and Eli; 3 brothers, Duane Palmer of Stanwood, Roger (Jean) Palmer of Manchester, and Ronald Palmer of Cedar Rapids; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends special to Lowell, Bill Kula, Rusty Peck, and Jay Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Lydell, Curtis, and Donald Palmer; and a grandson, Justus Palmer.
Lowell was born April 3, 1932 in Castalia, Iowa, the son of Dale and Lorita (Borrett) Palmer. On June 23, 1955, he was united to Mary A. Clemen at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Farley. Lowell served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Northwestern Bell for 32 years, retiring in 1986. Lowell then started his own company, Palmer Telecommunications, Inc. in Marion, fully retiring in 2002. Lowell was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, Telephone Pioneers of America – Region 3, and was a former Scoutmaster of Troop 27 of Cedar Rapids. Lowell enjoyed gardening, fishing, and his grandchildren. His work was his hobby, and his customers and co-workers were his friends.
