Lorraine G. Hass, 109, of Cedar Rapids, passed away October 26, 2017, at Cottage Grove. Per Lorraine’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion.

Lorraine Hass was born March 8, 1908, in Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter of Byrde and Carl Gamble. After graduating from high school she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, for two years and then went to the University of Nebraska where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She was the Junior-Senior prom queen in her senior year. After graduation she taught high school English in Scribner, Nebraska for more than four years.

She married Albert (Abe) V. Hass of Chariton, Iowa, and they lived there for sixty-two years while raising their family. In Chariton, she was a member of two bridge clubs, one of the founders of the Chariton Book Club and the hospital auxiliary. However, her main focus became Southgate which is a low income housing facility that she helped become a reality. She served as a member of the Board there for over thirty years.

Lorraine and her husband were the parents of Albert Curtis (Judie) Hass and Patricia Gay Hass (Jim Mathews). She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her sister Virginia. She was the last living member of those generations of her family but is survived by her children, grandchildren, Ann, Amy and Andy as well as seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

During her life, Lorraine enjoyed knitting, reading and counter cross stitching. During her later years she became very frustrated when her fingers would not work to accomplish these things anymore and her diminishing eyesight limited her reading. She then turned to a Kindle and audiobooks to continue her reading interests. She learned to use a computer at age 91 and enjoyed reading and writing emails as well as keeping track of various family members on Facebook.

She and Abe traveled several times with friends to Europe and Asia. They purchased a condominium in Dillon, Colorado, and enjoyed many visits there both winter and summer for over thirty years. Her children and grandchildren all became skiers and while she enjoyed watching them she never ventured out to try the sport. She took great pleasure in her family and nothing pleased her more than to have all of them come to visit “Granny”.
