Loren E. Burke, 90, of Earlville, died Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa following a lengthy illness.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2009 at United Parish Church in Earlville by Pastor Jill Mack. Family will greet friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville and one hour before services on Friday at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Earlville.
Loren was born September 24, 1918 in Earlville, Iowa, the son of William and Hazel (Baskerville) Burke. He graduated from Earlville school system in 1936. Loren was united in marriage to Velma M. Schmidt in Manchester. The couple farmed for many years in Delaware County, getting started on his parents’ farm southeast of Earlville. Loren starting driving truck in 1965 for Lahr Trucking, Hoth Trucking and finally CRST before retiring in 1985.
Loren was a member the Earlville United Parish Church. He enjoyed reading, music, traveling and watching television.
Loren is survived by his wife, Velma Burke of Strawberry Point; four children, Ronald (Darlene) Burke of Winthrop, Janice (Robert) Miller of Earlville, Joel (Linda) Burke of Ranchos Palos Verde, CA, and Alan (Terry) Burke of Davenport; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and thirteen great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Emmadel “Amy” Sams of FL, Agnes “Dot” (Jim) Hinman of Marion, Walter “Bud” (Dee) Burke of Delhi, and Donald (Evelyn) Burke of Hancock, WI; in-laws, Paul Schmidt of Manchester, Lester Schmidt of Pittsburgh, PA, Hilda Smith of Dothan, AL, and Amanda Schmidt of WI.
Loren was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hazel Burke; one granddaughter, Lee Ann Miller; and one brother, Robert Burke; in-laws, Elda Schmidt, Bernice Schmidt, Gordon Smith, and Ed Schmidt, Bill & Dorothy Schmidt, Alvin & Louise Schmidt, and Edna & Woodrow Lewis.
