Loras David Greif

Loras David Greif, 69, of 3010 18th Avenue, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, November 8, 2006, surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, by Rev. John Gossman. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Rita, his children, Daniel (Amy) Greif of Severna Park, Maryland, and their children, Elizabeth, Alexandra and Carrie; Laurie (Phil) Wirtz of Waukee, and their children, Chelsea, Leah and Hannah; Larry (Laura) Greif of Hiawatha, and their children, Stephanie and Lucas; Tammie (Mike) Tomash of Marion, and their children, Jason, Jordan and Katie; Judy (Dave) Lockhart of Chicago; Nancy Greif of Marion and her daughter, Lauren; Sharie Greif of Marion and her daughter, Amelia; and Andrew Greif of Cedar Rapids.
Also surviving are two sisters, Teresa (Dick) Stevens and Janette (Duane) Freese; six brothers, Robert (Alvina) Greif, Joseph (Jean) Greif, Earl (Velda) Greif, Fay (Lois) Greif, Arnold (Betty) Greif and Louis (Marcene) Greif; a sister-in-law, Elodie Greif; and many other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Josephine, a stepmother, Renny Greif and a brother, John.
Loras was born the son of Emil and Josephine (Gudenkauf) Greif on October 8, 1937, in Hopkinton. On May 2, 1959, he was married to Rita Werner. Loras was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Following his retirement he did volunteer work in the community.
Loras was an incredible family man who showed great compassion to all people. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memrial fund has been established in Loras' memory.
