Lois Gaye Way, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. At 10:00 am they will depart for St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, where they will continue to greet friends until the Funeral Mass begins at 11:00 a.m. Burial: Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point, Iowa.
Lois is survived by her husband of 67 years, Clair; their son, Daniel (Paula) Way; and three daughters, Tonja (Roland) Gorrell, Nancy (John) Herring, and Carey (Martin) Miller. She will also be greatly missed by her 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Kirby, Dr. R.E. Grant, Charles Gorkow, Ray Harris; and Herbert Hunt.
Lois was born in Strawberry Point, Iowa, on February 12, 1927, the daughter of Check and Rose (Simek) Lang. There, she enjoyed her childhood with her siblings; Shirley, Jack, Lucille, Barbara, and Edgar (Pete). Lois graduated from Strawberry Point High School and went on to receive her teaching degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She taught in country schools prior to her marriage, and was a substitute teacher in Cedar Rapids thereafter. Lois met her husband, Clair Way, and they were wed on February 7, 1947. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, where they raised four loving children.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She spread laughter and love to those who knew her. She enjoyed spending time with friends, especially her dear friends Steve and Casey Hogan. Lois was a member of the St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
