Lillyan M. Barnd, 90, a resident of Mercy Hallmar Residential Care, Cedar Rapids, died there Friday, October 24, 2008, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Marion, by Father John Gossman. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m., Monday, October 27, 2008 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a Parish Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include her children, Julie (Leslie) Prahl of St. Paul, Minnesota, James O. (Betty) Barnd, Jr. of Marion, Pauline “Polly” (Robert) Hatala of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Julie) Barnd of Marion, and Dan (Jean) Barnd of Mt. Vernon; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-granddaughters and a brother, Clyde (Marsella) Malone of Aledo, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim and a brother, Edwin Malone.
Lillyan was born November 2, 1917, the daughter of Clyde and Maude (Carr) Malone, in Strawberry Point, Iowa. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1935. She then graduated from Paris Beauty College in Cedar Rapids. Following graduation, Lillyan was adventuresome and sought other opportunities by traveling to Denver, Colorado and other destinations. Lillyan married her high school sweetheart, James O. Barnd, Sr. on February 2, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, where Jim was stationed. He died April 2, 2004. Lillyan was proud of her career as a beautician and worked at Johnson’s Barber Shop, Armstrongs, and other shops. She was a longtime member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Marion Garden Club.
Lillyan will be remembered for her lifelong giving spirit by helping others including her longtime neighbor, Amy. The family would like to thank Polly, her daughter; Geneieve, “Tootsie”, her roommate, and the Hallmar staff for their loving care of the last two years.
Lillyan’s family will be forever grateful for the blessings of her life.
A memorial fund has been established in Lillyan’s memory.
