Lewis C. Newman, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, January 25, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Bob Voels. Military Honors will be conducted. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 pm. Monday, January 28, 2013, at the funeral home, where Masonic Rites will be conducted at 6:30 pm. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; his children, Terry (Patricia) Newman of Cedar Rapids, Sandra (Vincent) Dabrowski of Knightdale, North Carolina, and Jeffrey (Kris Spratt) of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim) Semelroth, Sara (Ryan) Valden, Christy (Chad) Charbowski, Katie (Tim) Privette and Liz Dabrowski; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Lewis was born February 12, 1925, the son of Charles and Ruby (Cutler) Newman, in Peoria, Illinois. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. On October 27, 1946, Lewis was united in marriage to Mary Harrison at the Trinity Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He worked for the United States Post Office as an Area Maintenance Technician, retiring after 30 years of service.
Lewis was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee and drove the church van. He also was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Scottish Rite, Mispah Lodge and El Kahir Shrine, where he was a Hospital Dad driving kids to the hospital and took care of the calliope for the parades. Lewis was a Boy Scout Leader of Troop 18 for 30 years and volunteered at St. Luke’s Spiritual Care Department. He enjoyed square dancing.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church or Camp Courageous, in memory of Lewis.
