Lewis M. Dreibelbis, 92, formerly of Bickford Cottage, most recently a resident of the Anamosa Care Center, died Thursday, October 30, 2008, at the care center following a brief illness. Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Dick Ernst. Private Inurnment: Scotch Grove Cemetery.

He is survived by his son, Richard Lewis Dreibelbis (Priscilla Pillard) of Quincy, Florida; grandchildren, Daniel (Teresa Graham) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Ann Marie of Charlottesville, Virginia; and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Megan of Jacksonville. Also surviving are brothers M.D. “Pat” (Minnie) Dreibelbis of Cedar Rapids and Col. (USAF ret.) Ryland Roy (Peggy) Dreibelbis of Bowie, Maryland.

Lewis married Martha Marie Serbousek of Center Junction in March 1937. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary shortly before her death in 2003. His parents; his brother, Donald; and sisters, Dorothy Lazio, Ethyl Mizaur, and Eleanor Hedges also preceded him in death.

Lewis was born in Scotch Grove on December 12, 1915, the son of Lewis Augustus Dreibelbis and Carrie Miller Dreibelbis. He lived his whole life in Jones County. He graduated from Center Junction High School in 1933 and Lennox College in Hopkinton in 1937. He Served in the US Army during WW II from 1943 to 1946. He later served as a Jones County Deputy Sheriff and was then elected Sheriff and served from 1951 to 1963. Lewis also served as the Jones County representative on the first Kirkwood College Board of Directors and on the Planning Commission for the City of Anamosa. He was a longtime member of the Masons and Shriners and the American Legion. Lewis attended the Congregational Church in Anamosa. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He resided in Anamosa until moving to Marion in 1999.
