Lester W. Washburn, 87, of Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, formerly of Center Point, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, in the care center, following a lengthy illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the Troy Mills Christian Church, Troy Mills, by the Rev. Les Larson. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills, with military rites.
Survivors include his sons, Donald (Connie) Washburn of Center Point and Duane (Vickie) Washburn of Walker; four stepchildren; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Jeffries of Overland Park, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Irene and Maxine; three brothers, Orville, Quentin and Clair; two sisters, Lavone Washburn and Lois Shody; and a granddaughter, Lori Reid.
Lester was born May 4, 1917, the son of Carl and Alma Saxton Washburn, in Walker, Iowa. He served with the United States Army during World War II. On July 12, 1945, Lester was united in marriage to Irene Wachel. She died December 27, 1992. He married Maxine Bragaw on April 14, 1994. She died April 20, 2003. A farmer in the area, Lester also worked at Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of the Troy Mills Christian Church. A lifetime member of the Troy Mills American Legion Floyd Williamson Post #712, Lester served as the first Post Commander. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and dancing.
Military rites will be conducted by the Troy Mills American Legion Floyd Williamson Post #712.
