Lester LeRoy Michel, 93, formerly of Marion and Central City, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, in Community General Hospital in Sterling, Illinois, after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Del Bear. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 - 8 p.m. today (Monday.) Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.

Survivors include a son, Morgan (Kathleen) Michel of Byron, Illinois; a daughter, Alice Michel of Anacortes, Washington; a grandson, Evan Michel of Byron, Illinois; a niece, Mitzi Carroll of Seattle, Washington; a great-niece, Emily James of Round Rock, Texas; a great-nephew, Bradley James of Austin, Texas; and many other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Muriel; a sister, Marie James; and a nephew, Robert James.

LeRoy was born November 27, 1910, in Marion, Iowa, to Elmer and Elsie Schultz Michel. After attending school in Marion and Clear Lake, Iowa, he graduated in 1930. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and because of the Depression, left school in 1933. He participated in athletics in high school and played football at Coe. LeRoy began working for the post office in Cedar Rapids and later, for the post office in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he met his wife, Muriel Morgan, who was attending the University of Tennessee. They were married June 3, 1941, in Marion, Iowa. Muriel died August 22, 1998.

LeRoy was employed by Century Engineering during World War II until 1948 and returned there in 1952 after working in Illinois and Wisconsin. Most of his working life was spent with Highway Equipment Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he rose to vice president of manufacturing. He retired from Highway Equipment in 1979. LeRoy was a 50-year member of the Masons and a member of the Eastern Star.

LeRoy and Muriel moved from their home in Marion to Central City, Iowa, in 1976. In 1988, they moved to Mt. Morris, Illinois. LeRoy continued to live there until he moved to Byron, Illinois, in 2001.

LeRoy was always interested in outdoor activities, especially gardening and fishing, and liked to play cards. He enjoyed his family and his home. He followed his son?s athletic career and his daughter?s interests. He was always supportive of his children, no matter what their involvement. LeRoy was active in his church and community. He was active in his son?s Boy Scout troop and followed his grandson?s Scout career with great interest. Both LeRoy and Muriel enjoyed and supported their children and grandson. Family was central to their lives.

The greatest memories, which his children and grandson will always remember, are family time, vacations and holidays.

A memorial fund has been established for the Diabetes Association or Boy Scouts of America in memory of LeRoy.
