Leslie E. Rowse, 91, of Marion, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, July 15, 2017. A graveside service will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, on Thursday, July 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m.
Les was born on June 22, 1926, in Mason City, Iowa, to George and Marion Rowse. He enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II. In 1945, he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Les spent many years working for the railroad. He began as a brakeman on the Rock Island and later was promoted to conductor. After the Rock Island closed, he worked for the Iowa Northern, and at one time, served as its president. Anyone who met Les quickly learned that he loved railroading. After retirement, he built a model railroad that he enjoyed demonstrating to everyone. It was later donated to the Marion Heritage Center. Throughout Les’s life, his railroad co-workers were a constant source of support and friendship.
In 1966, Les married Vivian Patterson. They made many special memories during their 42 years together. Whether traveling in their Airstream, fishing in Minnesota or just sitting on their front porch, they thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company.
Les was an avid birdwatcher and gardener who took great pride in his flower beds. His poodle Penny was by his side everywhere he went. Les could liven up any group with his many jokes and stories. For many years, the Marion Hy-Vee was his daily destination.
He is survived by his niece, Suanne (Max) Huffman, nephew Steven (Alta) Jones, and his much-loved great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family requests no flowers, memorials can be made to Meals on Wheels 819 5th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52401. They served Les for several years.
Special thanks to neighbors and friends who helped Les. His family is especially grateful for the caring staffs at Bickford Cottage, Winslow House Care Center, and Crestview Acres of Marion.
