Leroy Joseph Penne, 90, a resident of Brookview Independent Living in Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marion, died Sunday, November 9, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a vigil service will begin at 6 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include four children, Dale (Pat) Penne of Mt. Pleasant, Dean (Mary) Penne of Forsyth, Illinois, Anne (Jim) Fitzpatrick of Cedar Rapids, and Tom (Rita) Penne of Coralville; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and seven siblings, Walter Penne, William Penne, Leo Penne, Marie Penne, Dorothy Schneider, Lloyd Penne, and Raymond Penne.

Leroy was born December 17, 1917, the son of William and Mary (Meany) Penne in Cresco. He graduated from Ridgeway High School. On February 24, 1941, he married Irene Kirschman in Cresco. She died October 3, 2000. Leroy farmed in the late 30’s and 40’s, and then owned and operated a tavern in Ridgeway for five years. Leroy later owned and operated Penne Construction for many years, retiring as a union carpenter in 1980.

Leroy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, Carpenters Union Local No. 308, Knights of Columbus No. 5390 of Marion, and was active in Habitat for Humanity.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice in Leroy’s memory.
