Leroy “Chief” Walter Barnes, Jr., 30, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away Monday, May 20, 2019, following a brief illness, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Family will greet friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. A Funeral Service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, officiated by Certified Celebrant, Amy Hart. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Leroy was born September 7, 1988, in Cook County, Illinois, the son of Leroy Sr. and Tanya (Green) Barnes. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School and went on to attend the University of Iowa for nursing. Leroy worked at Centro Molding in North Liberty and the Double Tree Hotel and Convention Center in Cedar Rapids.
Leroy is survived by his daughter, Mariah Barnes Stearns; son, Tevin Walter Barnes; mother, Tanya Green; father, Leroy Barnes, Sr.; siblings, Leroy “Big Boy” Barnes, Jr., Tanya “Big Girl” Barnes, Tonya “Nike” Barnes, Mercedes Barnes, Telena Barnes, Deville Green, and Selena Barnes; maternal grandmother, Sally Green; and in-laws, Jerry and Karen Stearns.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lexi Stearns; sister, Tanya Victory Barnes; and grandparents, Walter Green and Leroy and Bernice Barnes.
