Leonard F. Kroupa, 87, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, January 20, 2018, at West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Services: 12 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Ivan Nienhaus, with visitation one hour prior. Family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. where they invite you to bring memories to share at 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites by the VFW.

Leonard was born December 6, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Frank and Ruth (Adams) Kroupa. They later divorced and Leonard went on to live with his aunt and uncle, Mary and Wencil Mahacek. In 1950 he joined the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict, until 1954. On May 8, 1952, Leonard was united in marriage to Patricia Shanahan at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. He started an apprenticeship with IBEW 405 working for multiple electrical contractors, retiring in 1992. Leonard later worked as an electrical inspector for the City of Cedar Rapids until 2007.

In April of 2017, Leonard and his fellow veterans were escorted to Washington D.C. on an Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. He shared this experience with his grandson, Justin. While there, they visited the memorials that were built and dedicated to their sacrifice.

Leonard was a lifetime member of the VFW and an active member in the IBEW 405 for 63 years. He enjoyed gambling, bowling, going on long car rides, and vacations. Leonard loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and his greatest love was spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include his daughters, Kandace (Mike) Garner of Cedar Rapids, Nancy Hampshire of Orlando, Florida, Gail (Mark) Loeffler and Lisa (John) Panek, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Karey and Brian Dirks, Quintin and Mary Garner, Danyelle Hampshire, Stephanie and Travis VanEe, Kimberly Loeffler, Nicholas and Nika Loeffler and Justin Panek; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Mary-Lou Pierce; and Marge Pace.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife Patricia; and grandson, Christopher Kroupa.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Prairie Hills Senior Living and West Ridge Care Center for their loving care of Leonard.
