Leonard J. Karasek, 89, of 2448 10th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, died peacefully in his sleep August 4, 2006, in his home following a brief illness. Services: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday August 8, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Gary Shank. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday August 7, 2006, at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Evelyn "Evie?; his nieces, Linda (Joseph) Fitzgerald, Pamela (Steven) Shipp and Janet K. Castleman; his nephews, David Karasek, Albert F. (Alba) Shank and Tom (Angela) Shank;and a brother, Elmer F. Karasek.
Leonard was born August 20, 1916 in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Grant High School in 1934 and Coe College in 1938 with a B.A. degree in Commerce and Finance. Leonard was a combat veteran of WWII. He was awarded the bronze star with "V? device, European campaign medal with two Battle stars and the Combat Infantryman?s Badge. On September 1, 1940, he married Evelyn Smith in Cedar Rapids. He was an auditor for Bohemian Savings and Loan Association in Cedar Rapids where at the time of his retirement he was vice president.
Leonard was an avid golfer and an accomplished trumpet musician where he was a long-time member of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, the El Kahir Shrine Band, and the Czech Polka Cultural Band. He also was a member of Local #137 of the Musician?s Union, the Elk?s Lodge, the Masonic Temple and the VFW.
Although Leonard and Evie had no children their devotion and dedication to each other was inspirational and a most positive example of the meaning and essence of matrimony.
