Leonard was born on February 12, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Godfrey and Mamie (Shimek) Jandik. He attended St. Ludmila Grade School and was a 1949 graduate from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids. After graduation, Leonard was employed at LeFebure Corporation, until his retirement in 1985. On September 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Joyce Esther Sampica. Leonard took a leave from LeFebure, to enlist in the United States Navy and served honorably from 1951 to 1955. For more than 60 years, he was a devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion with his wife, Joyce.
Leonard was first and foremost a family man. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, always dedicated to his family. Leonard’s steadfast and loving support and commitment were a foundation for his entire family. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. Leonard was well known in the area for his award winning vegetables, melons, apples, pears, and grapes, and especially his homemade wine. Leonard enjoyed sharing them with his family and friends the most. He always gave “the best ones” away! Leonard was proud of the fruits of his efforts and wanted his friends to enjoy his “best” with him. When Leonard wasn’t gardening, he was fishing. Together with his wife, Leonard and Joyce were avid walleye fishermen, spending many weeks in the spring at Wisconsin and Minnesota, catching their limit. They also loved to fish in local ponds for crappies and blue gill. Their entire family enjoyed fish, and macaroni and cheese dinners made with the ‘catch of the day’! Leonard was a man of honor, truth, commitment, and most importantly, Love. He will be greatly missed and will always be loved.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Joyce Jandik of Lakeville, Minnesota; son, Dennis D. (Sandra) Jandik of Eagan, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Gregory T. (Varya) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Sarah A. (Matthew) Hiniker of Roberts, Wisconsin, and Andrew M. (Taylor) Jandik of Lakeville, Minnesota; and one great-granddaughter, Landyn Jo Jandik.
Leonard was preceded into eternal life by his parents; two brothers, Stanley Jandik and Jerome Jandik; and one sister, Dorothy Luzum.
