Leona M. Barry, 93, a resident of Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Newhall, died there Tuesday, September 23, 2008, following a brief illness. Services: 1:30 p.m., Monday, September 27, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. David Snyder. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, September 27, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn Ann Sellers of Henderson, Nevada; her sister, Evelyn Frances Gunderson and her husband Andrew Gunderson both of Cedar Rapids; her grandchild, Brad Sellers and his children, Caroline, Derek and Margaret from Richmond, Virginia; her grandchild, Richard Sellers and his children, Michael, Andrew, Mary Catherine and Nicole Anne of Richmond, Virginia and her grandchild, Roberta Sellers and her children, Dennis Potridge, Jr. and Cole Potridge of Montpelier, Virginia; and her sister-in-law, Josephine Siderius of Kalispell, Montana.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd H. Barry; her parents, Avis (Fuller) and Thomas Edward Seilhamer; and two sisters, Mildred Seilhamer Baumgartner and Lucille Seilhamer.
Leona was born on June 8, 1915, in Newhall, Iowa. She married Lloyd Barry on June 5, 1935. They lived in Newhall until 1989, when they moved to Meth-Wick. Leona attended Newhall High School where she played basketball and graduated in 1934. Leona graduated from Paris Academy, then owned and operated a beauty shop in Newhall for 23 years. She was secretary for the family business, Fuller Mfg. Co., which they purchased from Avis and Ed Seilhamer.
Leona was treasurer in the Newhall Central Presbyterian Church, active in Eastern Star, El Kahir Widows Club and St. Luke’s Auxiliary.
She loved to sew and made many quilts for charities. She also loved to play cards with friends, watch University of Iowa basketball, Wheel of Fortune, and, of course, CNBC. She really loved her Dairy Queens and chocolates. Leona also enjoyed U.S. and international travel. She and Lloyd made many trips across the U.S. and overseas, many included family.
