Leon Usher, 72, of 826 22nd Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, in his home after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Private services conducted by Rev. Christine Wagner-Hecht. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 25, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Lura; two daughters, Janet Huff of Cedar Rapids and Helen (Robert) Ibsen of Clarence; four grandchildren, David (Heather) Huff, Dana (Andy) Freymark, Brian Ibsen and special friend, Eric, and Johnathan Ibsen and special friend, Liz; great-grandchildren, Austin and Kaitlyn Huff, and Nolan and Ashlee Freymark. Also surviving are a brother, James (Mary Ann) Usher; and a sister, Susan Edmonds both of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leon was born April 24, 1933, the son of Wilmer and Opal (McBurney) Usher in Cedar Rapids. On June 6, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lura Mae Gates in Anamosa, Iowa. He was a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids and served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955 during the Korean Conflict. After 25 years he retired from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department as a Lieutenant.
Leon enjoyed woodworking and fishing as well as blue grass music.
