Leo John Shields, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, slipped peacefully into heaven Tuesday evening, February 21, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids surrounded by his family that he dearly loved. Services: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2012, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dr. Don Jackson. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, February 24, 2012, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Shields; sons, Terry (Dee) Shields and Randy (Lisa) Shields; daughters, Kim (Mark) Hazlett and Tammie (Brian) Lee; stepsons, Jeff (Paula) Larson, Rod (Kathy) Larson and Rick (Jody) Larson; and 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Shields; and his first wife, Evelyn Shields.
Leo was born January 21, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On July 11, 1984, he was united in marriage to Linda Shilhon-Larson. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. From 1962 to 1988 he worked at Rockwell Collins.
Leo was a member of the Marion American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a talented woodworker and could repair just about anything he set his mind to. He dearly loved his poodles, especially Wacky and could be found on the couch surrounded by them. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping and also loved playing bingo and proved to be more successful at it than most.
