Dr. Leo M. Schmall, 80, of 4570 Mission Ave., Marion, Iowa, died, Sunday, April 27, 2008, in his home following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. Inurnment: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockwell, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, June; 11 children, Mike (Jill) Schmall of Columbus, Ohio, Teri (Roy) Jones of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mary (Jerry) Theilen of Mason City, Iowa, Rose (Pat) Donnelly of Robins, Iowa, Joanne Schmall of Phoenix, Arizona, Joe (Barb) Schmall of Robins, Iowa, Kathy Cruz of Orlando, Florida, Steve (Kelly) Schmall of Dubuque, Iowa, Tom (Sandy) Schmall of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Robert (Jan) Schmall of Cedar Rapids, and Mark (Michelle) Schmall of Charleston, South Carolina; 32 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two, brothers Anton and Edward Schmall; two sisters, Rose Anderson and Ann Pfow; and a grandson, Jim Schmall.

Leo was born October 31, 1927, the son of Louis G. and Katherine M. (Magdits) in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated in 1945 from Grant Township Consolidated Schools and served with the U.S. Navy from 1946 ?" 1948. He married June Angle on August 29, 1949 in Ledyard, Iowa. Leo graduated from Iowa State University in 1954 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He worked for many years as a veterinarian in private practice in Rockwell, Iowa. Leo then joined the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture as Assistant State Veterinarian and worked there until his retirement in 1999. He was ordained as a Permanent Deacon of the Catholic Church in October of 1978. Leo had an intense love of his family and the work he did with animals and within the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice or to the Xavier Foundation, in Leo’s memory.
