Leo J. Mensen, 83, of Earlville died, Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 28, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville, conducted by: Rev. Dennis Quint. Visitation: 1:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Earlville with a 8:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Burial: St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Earlville.

Leo was born April 17, 1928 in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Frank A. and Henrietta “Hattie” (Kramer) Mensen. He attended school at Sts. Peter & Paul and then graduated from St. Boniface. Leo then worked as a hired farmhand. On September 26, 1950, Leo was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Funke at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. The couple farmed near Earlville. Leo drove school bus for Western Dubuque Schools for twenty years and sold Moorman’s Feed for fifteen years. Retiring in October 1990, the couple moved to Earlville.

Leo was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville where he served as past-president of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knight of Columbus in Dyersville, served on the Beckman School Board and was past-president of the Beckman Booster Club. Leo was also currently president of Oak Crest resident council. Leo enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren.

Leo is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mensen of Earlville; eleven children, Daniel of Urbana, Loras (Suzanne) and Steve (Julie) both of Earlville, Gary (Nancy) of Dyersville, Deb Meis of Platteville, WI, Kevin (Kathy) of Dyersville, Tom (Jill) of Dyersville, Mike (Peg) of Adel, Cindy (Dan) Willenborg of Dyersville, Carl (Lisa) of Luxemburg, and Donnie (Amy) of Carroll; twenty-eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, a brother, LaVerne (Janice) of Petersburg; and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Mensen of Manchester, also surviving, Verna Lee Digman, Rita (Lawrence) Lansing, Leon (Karen) Funke, Floyd (Janet) Funke, Lois (Artie) Kern, Theresa (Charlie) Schindler, and Darlene (Wayne) Wegmann

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hattie Mensen; a daughter-in-law, Marcia Mensen; granddaughter, Tiffany Jo Mensen; and three brothers, Edmund (Irene), Ambrose (Mary Ann), and Arnold Mensen; mother and father in-law, Hugo and Regina (Deutmeyer) Funke; in-laws, Eddie Digman, Mary Lou Funke, and a nephew,Larry Digman.

Memorial fund has been established in Leo’s memory.
