Leo Eugene Elsbury, 77, of Marion and formerly of Alburnett, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015, at his residence. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion conducted by Father O’Connor. Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion with scripture service beginning at 4:00 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids with military rites provided by the American Legion Post #298.
Survivors include his daughters, Vicky (Tom) Kennedy of Dyersville and Kristine Gibson (Jeff Demmel) of South Amana; son, Douglas (Deb) Elsbury of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, Mitch, Brad, and Danielle Kennedy, Beth and Brenner Gibson, and Spencer and Kate Elsbury; brothers, Fred (Diane) Elsbury and Larry (Mary) Elsbury all of Lamont; and sisters, Jean Cue of Oelwein and Dianne (Roger) Bolsinger of Garber.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice on March 11, 1985, parents, and granddaughter, Morgan.
Leo was born on May 1, 1938 in Manchester to Leonard and Reka (Kruger) Elsbury. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Leo married Janice Vorwald on April 25, 1964 in Garnavillo, Iowa. He traveled the country with the Wilson’s Clydesdales eight horse hitch attending numerous parades and events. He was employed by Wilson/Farmstead until 1990. He then drove truck and worked for the Iowa DOT. Leo was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #298.
He enjoyed socializing and playing cards with his friends. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Leo was happiest when socializing with his family, friends, and grandchildren.
