Lena Louise Riches (Thomsen)

Lena L. Riches, 91, a resident of the St. Luke’s Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Onslow, Iowa, died there Friday, September 12, 2008, following respiratory failure. Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 15, 2008, at Hope Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Dan Clark Bridges. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, September 14, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: North Madison Pioneer Cemetery, Center Junction.
Survivors include her daughters, Marilyn I. Schmidt of Cedar Rapids and Donna M. Woodward of Center Junction; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a brother, Julius Thomsen of Center Junction.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; son, John F. Riches; brothers, Arnold Thomsen and Marvin Thomsen; and sisters, Anna Holtz, Johanna Hinrichs and Amanda Parmenter.
Lena was born July 22, 1917, in Lockheart, Minnesota, the daughter of Mathias and Matilda (Schlemmer) Thomsen. She married John Riches and farmed with him for many years.
Lena was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and a coffee group. She loved playing cards and making baby clothes for Mercy Medical Center.
