Lela Jean Carte-Kohl, 82, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2017, at her home in Atkins, Iowa. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at Cedar Hills Community Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation: 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, at the church. Burial: Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, Iowa, at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Lela was born on July 13, 1934, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Robert & Eula (Barnes) Knight. She graduated from the Donnellson High School in 1952 and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. In 1953, Lela married Clifford Carte. The couple later divorced. Lela worked for Merchant Bank in Cedar Rapids, H&R Block and retired in 1996 from Amana Refrigeration in Amana, Iowa. On August 31st, 1996, Lela married Emery “Vern” Kohl in Atkins, Iowa.
Lela enjoyed collecting giraffe figurines, bowling and square dancing. She was a faithful member of Cedar Hills Community Church for 50 years. Lela loved to dote on her grandchildren.
Lela is survived by her five children, Dennis (Pam) Carte of Green City, Missouri, David (Kris) Carte and Cathy (Dan) Vollbrecht, all of Atkins, Iowa, Karen (Joe) Jackson of Lathrop, Missouri, and Kevin (Barb) Carte of Williamsburg, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a brother, Darrell (Patty) Knight of Donnellson, Iowa; and her best friend of many years, Vera Wilkinson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents, Robert & Eula Knight; her husband, Vern Kohl; two grandchildren; and an infant sister, Naomi Beth Knight.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Camp Courageous, 12007 – 190th Street, Monticello, Iowa 52310.
