Lee Richard Miller, 77, formerly of Winthrop, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Buchanan County Health Center, Independence. The family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at the funeral home conducted by Mike Olinger. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills.
Lee is survived by his wife, Marlys of Winthrop; daughters, Vanessa (Emil) Tisl of Independence and Valerie (Scott) Gunderson of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Marc (Karen) Miller of Toddville; grandchildren, Andrea and Ashley Tisl, Kent and Heather Gunderson, Danielle (Trent) Stotler, Tricia (Brett) Thomas and Dylan Miller; great-grandchildren, McKenna Wilson, Leelan and Watson Thomas and Henry Stotler; a sister, Beverly Freeman of Dysart; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Miller; sister, Donna Miller; and a very special uncle, Max Prindle.
Lee was born October 3, 1939, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Dencil and Vada (Prindle) Miller Moeller. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1958. During his senior year and immediately following his graduation, Lee worked for the Waterloo Community School District. On May 30, 1959, he was united in marriage to Marlys Shafer in Waterloo. He and Marlys farmed in rural Winthrop for 58 years.
Lee and Marlys enjoyed restoring and showing antique cars. They traveled all over the country with their cars attending countless conventions and car shows. Lee also loved time spent at their cabin in Troy Mills on the Wapsi River. His family and his work ethic were the central focus of his life.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Lee’s memory.
