Leaton D. Perkinson, 68, of Marion, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Windmill Manor in Coralville from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Celebration of Life: 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be at Limestone Cemetery in Hanna City, Illinois, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Marion; three children, Kathy (Randy) Olson of Northfield, Minnesota, Brian (Mary Svoboda) Perkinson of Chicago, Illinois, and Debby Perkinson of Collinsville, Illinois; four step-children, Kathryn Barnes of Cedar Rapids, Lisa Swanson of Marion, Gretchen (Adam) Meek of Chicago, Illinois and Carl (Carie) Binhammer of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Ariane, Courtney, Reid, Benjamin, Samara, Dante' and Mercedes; eleven step-grandchildren, Jessica, Spencer, Chelsea, Nicole, Alison, Rachel, Ashley, Kathryn, Jonathan, Amanda and Daniel; two step-great-grandchildren, Anabelle and Tyler; a nephew, David (Kayleen)Pelkey; a niece, Carolyn Edminster; and an uncle, Robert (Bertha) Perkinson of Peoria, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jeanne Pelkey.
Leaton was born July 12, 1938, in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Benjamin and Mildred (Fuller) Perkinson. He earned his BA at the University of Illinois and MBA at the University of Chicago. Leaton was a broker at Robert W. Baird and Company, retiring in 1998. He married Barbara Frostick Binhammer on October 4, 1980 in Cedar Rapids.
Leaton was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Cedar Rapids Noon Lions Club, where he was a past president. One of Leaton's most enjoyable experiences was flying a private plane cross country. He enjoyed traveling, being outdoors, fishing, canoeing, biking, golf, and baseball. His integrity was a beacon to anyone who knew him.
Leaton loved his family dearly. They will always remember his bravery and grace while facing Alzheimer's Disease. The family takes comfort in knowing that Leaton has been called home to his heavenly father and has now been made perfect. The family would like to give a special thank-you to the wonderful caregivers at Windmill Manor in Coralville and to Amenity Hospice.
