Lawrence D. Welbes, 88, of Silver Pines Assisted Living Community, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, November 21, 2008, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tom Parrott. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his son, John Welbes of Las Vegas, Nevada; stepdaughter, Nadine Hazwinkel of Marion; stepson, Kenneth Miller of Marion; three grandchildren, Dave Welbes, Mike Welbes and Shelley Lien; 15 great grandchildren; stepgrandchilren, Randy Hazwinkel of Marion and Debra Eiler of Atkins; niece, Tasia Freeman; and cousins, Charles Fisher, Robert Fisher, Dick Fisher all of Cedar Rapids and Dick Welbes of Vinton.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Wencil Barta; first wife, Frances; second wife, Dorothy; and sister, Dorothy Welbes.
Lawrence was born July 8, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Della (Gregor) Welbes. He served in the 79th Infantry Division of the Army from 1942 to 1945, where he received several awards including the 5 Battle Stars, European Theatre Operation, Presidential Citation, Purple Heart, two Good Conduct Medals, World War II Ribbons and Marksmanship Medals for rifle and pistol. Lawrence married Frances Codling on October 3, 1945. After her death, he later married Dorothy Miller on June 19, 1979. She died October 5, 2003. Lawrence was a semi truck driver for 30 years.
Lawrence was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church and the American Legion Hanford Post #5.
