LaVerne Mae Simmen, 82, of Central City, died Monday, February 26, 2007, at home, following a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City by Father Wayne Droessler. The family will greet friends from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Inurnment: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Simmen of Cedar Rapids and David (Julie) Simmen of Central City; a brother, Robert (Mary) Bader of Protivin; five grandchildren, Serena Simmen, Zachary (Jen) Simmen, Valerie (Aaron) Ford, Jacob Simmen, and Sarah Simmen.

Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Joan Simmen of Central City and Esther Clemans of Alburnett; and two brothers-in-law, Norman Scheidel of Cresco and David Shores of North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Betty Scheidel and Donna Shores.

LaVerne was born November 8, 1924, the daughter of Louis and Adela (Kalishek) Bader in Cedar Rapids. On May 29, 1952, she married Ralph Simmen at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He died May 7, 2004. LaVerne worked as a substitute cook at Central City Schools for over thirty years. She was a member of the Wapsi American Legion Post No. 421 Auxiliary of Central City and D.C. Club.

LaVerne truly enjoyed her Tuesday mornings spent at coffee with friends, and Tuesday evenings playing Bingo at the Central City American Legion. She was a wonderful baker and a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor?s choice in LaVerne?s memory.
