Laverne H. Roling

LaVerne H. Roling, 83, of Earlville, Iowa, died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness.
Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Family will greet friends from
2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 2 at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home in Earlville and after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Funeral Home. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Earlville.
LaVerne was born June 27, 1925 in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Frances (Welchert) Roling. He attended St. Joseph’s School in Earlville. LaVerne worked at the Manchester Canning Co. in Manchester before joining the U.S. Navy serving on the U.S.S. Richmond in the North Pacific during WWII. On July 13, 1953, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Francois at the Immaculate Conception Church in Masonville. The couple owned and operated Roling’s Grocery Store in Earlville for 30 years. LaVerne retired from John Deere in 1982 and Payless Foods in 2007.
LaVerne was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where he sang for more than 60 years in the choir. He was 60 year member of the Carpenter-Diesch-White American Legion Post #436, and a member of the Earlville Community Club and United Auto Workers. He also did wallpapering and painting on the side. LaVerne enjoyed being with his family, visiting friends and playing cards.
LaVerne is survived by his wife, Dorothy Roling; seven children, Diane Tigges of Madison WI, Duane (Deb) Roling of Dyersville, Daniel (Diane) Roling of Earlville, Deb (Keith) Hunt of Earlville, Darlene Hass of Van Horne, Dawn Roling of Cedar Rapids, and Doug (Angie) Roling of Cedar Rapids; four siblings, Ted (Helen) Roling of Eldora, Arlene Johannes of Dubuque, Al (Mary) Roling of Lake Oswego, OR, and Arthur “Mike” (Paula) Roling of Dubuque; fifteen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Frances Roling; one daughter at birth, Denise Frances Roling; and ten siblings, Rose Fessler, Agnes Sellner, Amanda Schraad, Mary Cherne, Hilda Lehman, Leona (Lukan) Cherne, Viola Sellner, Helen Bessey, Raymond Roling, and Donald Roling.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the LaVerne Roling Memorial Fund to be established.
