LaVerne A. Nelson, 88, of Monticello, Iowa formerly of Delaware, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness
LaVerne was born August 4, 1919 the daughter of Frank and Anna (Welch) Beecher, on her parent’s farm north of Farley, Iowa. LaVerne attended school in Farley, the country school in Milo Township and Delhi High School. In 1939, she met and married Howard Dempster. They divorced in 1941. The couple had one son, Carl. LaVerne later married Clifford Nelson. She and Clifford had three children, Gloria, Clifford, Jr., and Dennis. The couple lived in LeClaire, Iowa. Clifford passed away in 1988. She married Kenneth Krager and had one son, John. They later divorced. LaVerne moved with her family to rural Delaware, where she lived until 1994 when she moved to Milford, Iowa.
LaVerne was a cook at the Elrancho Villa at Bettendorf and also Cole’s Café in Delaware. She enjoys playing music and making crafts in her spare time. LaVerne especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren.
LaVerne is survived by four sons, Clifford (Carolyn) Nelson of Urbandale, John (Susan) Krager of Manchester, and Dennis (Danelle) Nelson of Lake Park, Carl “Clay” Willie of Davenport; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a special family friend, Robert Mangold.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Nelson; one daughter, Gloria Nelson; and her parents, Frank and Anna Beecher.
