Laverne R. Martens
January 22, 1937 — June 4, 2006
LaVerne "Marty? Martens, 69, of 1190 44th St., died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at his home, following a battle with heart disease. Graveside Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Palo Cemetery, Palo, Iowa by Rev. Del Bear. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; two daughters, Laura Martens of Hiawatha and Diane Harman of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Lloyd Martens of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren, Reggie Harris of Cedar Rapids and Stacie Horn of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and a brother.
LaVerne was born January 22, 1937, the son of Frank and Edith (Bowers) Martens in Arlington, Iowa. On December 8, 1956, he married Pat Swanson in Cedar Rapids. LaVerne worked for Dowie Outdoor, retiring after twenty-six years. He was an avid Cubs & Hawkeye fan, and had a band for twenty years (Marty and the Sundowners).
