LaVerne C. Lewis, 62, of 846 Camburn Court S.E., Cedar Rapids, died Monday, August 7, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center following a battle with cancer. Services: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplain Christine Wagner-Hecht. The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date.
Survivors include his two daughters, Cheryl Lewis of Cedar Rapids and Kathie (David) Cunningham of LaPorte City; five grandchildren; his father, Ralph Lewis of Mt. Pleasant; and his sister, Donna Cisco of Mt. Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen; and his sister, Marsha Hess.
LaVerne was born September 22, 1943, in Oskaloosa, the son of Ralph and Helen (Grootveld) Lewis. He grew up on the family farm near Hedrick, Iowa and was involved in every facet of it?s operation until attending college at Iowa State University. He graduated from college in 1968. In 1965, he was united in marriage to Patricia Jean Tate. They were married 22 years, raising two daughters. LaVerne worked for many years at the former Wilson Foods Meat Packing Company and then Farmstead Foods as a Quality Assurance Manager until it?s closing in 1990. The past 15 years he worked as Quality Assurance Manager for Quality Chef Foods in Cedar Rapids.
He enjoyed golf and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He liked to take vacations with his family to surrounding states, especially Branson, Missouri.
He was a very dedicated, loving father and grandfather and will be missed greatly by those who knew him.
