LaVerna “Maxine” Miller, 89, formerly of 104 Prairie St., Center Point, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Rev. John Caughron. The family will greet friends from 4 - 8 p.m., Monday, February 2, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial: Oliphant Cemetery, rural Center Point.
Survivors include 2 children, Doran Miller of Center Point and Jaxine (Mike) Corum of Pella; a daughter-in-law, Lucy Miller of Cedar Rapids; 6 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 son, Jack “Rocky”; 3 sisters, Valeta Martin, Berneta Caldwell, and Valera McBurney; 2 brothers, Jack Cress and Melvin “Sam” Cress.
Maxine was born October 26, 1919, the daughter of Caleb and Faye (Oliphant) Cress, in Center Point, Iowa. She married Jack Miller, Sr., in 1939. They later divorced. For many years, Maxine was a farm wife alongside her family. She worked the family farm, was a longtime housekeeper at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, and worked at the Center Point Community Schools in the cafeteria. Maxine was a member of the Center Point Christian Church, Parents Without Partners, SOLOS Together, and the Eagles Auxiliary. She was a great cook who loved making meals for her entire family and an avid gardener and seamstress. Maxine was adored by her family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
