LaVern Darl Shadden, 81, of Springville, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his loving family on July 10, 2023, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa, of pancreatic cancer. Visitation will be held 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion Iowa. Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the funeral home with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Tama, Iowa, with full military honors.
LaVern was born on January 19, 1942, in Marshalltown, the son of Darl David and Marie Elizabeth (Depew) Shadden. He was a graduate of Tama High School and went on to the United States Army. LaVern was united in marriage to Susan Jane Cooper in Iowa City. He worked as an over the road truck driver for 47 years, working for CRST and Don Hummer Trucking until his retirement in 2008. Following retirement, he hauled grain for his son Chris (Shadden Trucking) and race cars for his son Rusty. He particularly enjoyed fishing in Canada and traveling all over the United States in his motorhome and wintering in Arizona with mandatory daily happy hour. LaVern always had a great story to share, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
LaVern is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Susan of Springville, Iowa; his children, Tovi (Chris) Armstrong of Springville, Chris (Lori) Shadden of Central City, and Russell (Janet) Shadden of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Zach (Brittney) Armstrong, Cassandra (Jacob) Kubik, Megan (Ron) Mattingly, and Colton (Abby) Shadden; step-grandchildren, Preston (Amber) Reed, Ashley (Josh Banes) Reed, Lauren Barron, and Justin Abel;18 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Scott Shadden of Tama.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Roger Shadden and his wife, Evelyn “Mike” Shadden.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
