Larry Dean Latta, 64, of 1015 Eastern Dr. SE, died Sunday, November 19, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, following a short illness. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. There will also be visitation from 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2006, at DeJong Funeral Home in Keokuk. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2006, at DeJong Funeral Home in Keokuk by Rev. Bill Mitchell. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Keokuk.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Latta; his father, Kenneth Latta of Keokuk; his brother, Ron Latta of Miami; and several nieces, nephews, and his special cat "Runt?.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn.
Larry was born March 10, 1942, the son of Kenneth and Kathryn (Russell) Latta in Keokuk. He graduated from Keokuk Senior High School in 1959 and from Iowa State in 1963 with a B.S.E.E. On October 24, 1970, he married Frances Frey in Keokuk. He had worked for Motorola in Schaumburg, Illinois, Hallicrafters in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Bendix in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for eighteen years, retiring in 2002. After retiring he worked as a consultant with Boeing.
Larry enjoyed hydroplane boat racing, was a national champ several years, and was also in the APBA Hall of Champions. He earned his commercial pilot?s license and owned a Mooney 201 airplane. Larry was a ham radio operator and his call since junior high school was W9HAZ. He loved fast cars, especially his ?68 Charger with a 426 Hemi, and drove in the "Richard Petty Driving Experience?. Larry spent the winter months at his other home in Winter Haven, Florida.
