Larry W. Benge, Jr., 56, of Shueyville, passed away after a courageous 4 year battle with renal cell carcinoma, surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Celebration of Life: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by Father Donald Bruggeman and Deacon Dan Hoeger. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Monday at the Murdoch-Linwood Funeral & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a vigil service will begin at 5 p.m.. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children, Matthew and Katie Benge of Shueyville; his parents, Larry and Carolyn Benge, Sr. of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Mary Lou Benge (Michael Parnell) of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Andy Benge (Denise German) of Stilwell, Kansas; his father and mother-in-law, Ambrose and Eileen Hellmann of Ryan; sisters-in-law, Sharon (John) Fuhrman of Puyallup, Washington, Ruth (Jerry) Elsbury of Strawberry Point, Janet Krogmann of Manchester, Arlene (Ron) Wulfekuhle of Ryan, and Shirley (Dale) Manternach of Manchester; brother-in-law, Bob (Wendy) Hellmann of Ryan; and many nieces and nephews, countless friends, and bowling and fishing buddies.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Larry was born April 28, 1955, in Bloomfield, Iowa. He graduated from Lincoln Community in 1973. On November 16, 1985, he married Marilyn Hellmann at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They celebrated 25 wonderful years of marriage in November of 2010. They lived in Shueyville for the past 23 years. Larry worked at Evergreen Packaging as a Machinist for 37 years.

Larry loved bowling and achieved several 300 games. He took pride in teaching his children to bowl, fish, and embrace life. Larry liked fishing, pontooning, reading, and spending time with his family and friends.

A special thanks to Dr. Warren and his staff at the IBACC and those who cared for him at Mercy Medical Center.
