Kyriakos “Kulis” Korovilas, 66, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Visitation: Sunday, July 22, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Trisagion prayers at 7 p.m., followed by refreshments. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Veneta; his mother, Dimitra Korovilas of Greece; his sons, Pantelis Korovilas of London, England and Gregory (Erica) Korovilas of Chicago, Illinois; two granddaughters, Olivia and Sophia; a brother, Anastasios (Dimitra) Korovilas of Davenport, Iowa; sister-in-law, Elpiniki “Nikki” Halkidis of Springhill, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pantelis Korovilas; sister, Noula Spanos; and brother, Dan Korovilas.
Kulis was born in Filiatra, Greece in 1945. He came to the United States in 1970 and became a successful business owner, owning and operating many successful restaurants including J.D. Steakhouse on First Avenue and the Parthenon in Lindale Mall. On December 16, 1973, Kulis married Veneta Benetopoulou in Athens, Greece. He was a supervisor with Randstad at the General Mills Plant.
Kulis was a huge sports fan and enjoyed his two favorite teams, the Hawkeyes and the Greek team, Panathinaikos, where he formerly played soccer.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. Kulis will be greatly missed by family and friends. May his memory be eternal.
