Kermit I. Elam, 74, of Marion, passed away at Hospice House of Mercy on October 20, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Private family burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. on Saturday October 28, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion.
Kermit is survived by his children, Scott (Stacey) Elam of Marion, Mary Hand of Alburnett, and Brian (Teresa) Elam of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Lindsey (Paul) Sabelka, Breanna Elam, Mikayla Hand and Tyler Hand; mother, Ruby Elam Petrusch of Cedar Rapids; faithful cat, Kasey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife, Marilyn “Kay”; his father, Kermit E. Elam; step-father, Albert “Pete” Petrusch; and brother, Kenneth Elam.
Kermit was born January 19, 1943, in Rochelle, Illinois, the son of Kermit and Ruby (Tolley) Elam. He graduated from Linn-Mar High School in 1961. Kermit was united in marriage to Kay White on February 4, 1967, in What Cheer, Iowa. She passed away on August 27, 2017. Kermit was owner and operator of Bowman Woods Service and was also employed at Genencor in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 2006. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
