Kenneth Lowell Moon, 89, of 2385 Blake Boulevard, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Bill Harnish, with military honors by American Legion Hanford Post #5 of Cedar Rapids. Burial: Center Point Cemetery in Center Point. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to services time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Avis; a son, Kenneth E. (Robyn) Moon of Cedar Rapids; and a daughter, Annis K. (James) Bear of Preston, Iowa.
Also surviving are two grandsons, Philip G. Bear and Karl J. Bear, both of Preston; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harold, Jesse, Wendell, and Dallas Moon; and his sister, Evelyn (Protz) Greenwood.
Kenneth was born the son of Fred L. and Mineva C. (McIntyre) Moon on August 13, 1915, at Corning. He was united in marriage to Avis LeEtta Lanning in December of 1941. Kenneth was educated in the Corning school system, and received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Iowa. He served in the Iowa National Guard in the 1930?s and in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was assigned to General Eisenhower?s London and Paris Headquarters. He was called to field action, serving in the Fourth Infantry Division, at the Battle of the Bulge, fought across the Rhine at Remagen and helped liberate Dachau. Kenneth suffered a battlefield injury, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, but rejoined his outfit to complete the campaign in southern Germany, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class.
After the war, he located in Cedar Rapids, where he raised his family and practiced law for more than fifty years. In addition to private practice, he served as Cedar Rapids City Attorney and Assistant Linn County Attorney. He was a member of the Linn County Bar Association and the American Legion Hanford Post #5. His interests included playing bridge, watching birds, athletics and genealogy.
The family suggests that memorials be given to the Alzheimer?s Association of East Iowa, 1642 42nd Street N.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.
