Kenneth L. Mercer, 77, of 6306 E Avenue N.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at home following an accidental fall. Services: 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Robin Tyner. Friends may call from noon until service time Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial: Ridge Cemetery, Van Wert, Ohio, at a later date.
Survivors include his daughters, Jackie (Steve) Powell of Cedar Rapids and Deb (Bill) Robinson of Cedar Rapids; sons, Mike Mercer of Anamosa and Jim Mercer of Anamosa; eight grandchildren, Matt (Michelle) Powell, Jenni (Aleicer) Zerpa, Carrie (Joe) Byrd, Ryan Powell, Dan (Amy) Robinson, Brian Robinson, Katie O’Dwyer and Andy Robinson; eight great grandchildren; and his close friend, Laura Dooley of Iowa City.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Joan; and brother, Max Mercer.
Ken was born October 16, 1930, in Ohio City, Ohio, the son of James and Roberta (Crawford) Mercer. On June 25, 1950, he was united in marriage to Joan Graber. He grew up in Ohio City and moved to Van Wert in high school. In 1950, he moved to Cedar Rapids to work for his uncle and aunt, Lee and Betty Crawford. Ken took over the family business, Crawford Quarry, in 1969, until retiring in 1992. Ken enjoyed hunting, fishing and restoring vintage tractors. He will be remembered for his generosity to his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
