Kathy M. Vanous, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Sonda Kirsteatter. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, at the funeral home. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Robert; her children, Dave (Shelley) Vanous, Robyn (Bill) Rieckhoff and Chris (Bryan) Schissel, all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Drake, Luke and Shelby Vanous, Sydney and Carter Rieckhoff and Katelyn and Jack Schissel; two sisters, Jeannie Light of Lisbon and Karen (Herb) Friis of West Branch; and brother, Jim (Betty) Forrest of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Dale Light.
Kathy was born May 28, 1944, the daughter of William and Marie (Koppert) Forrest, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A graduate from Atkins High School in 1962, she attended business college in Cedar Rapids and started working at Square D. On February 25, 1967, Kathy was united in marriage to Robert Vanous, Jr. at the St. James United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids. In 1977, the couple started and operated Cedar Landscaping until they sold the business to their son in 2000. The couple then ran Morgan Creek Market on Hwy 30 West.
Kathy’s greatest love was her family, spending time with her children and especially with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Sokol Gymnastic Association and VFW Women’s Auxiliary in Cedar Rapids.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Kathy.
