Kathryn Elizabeth (Allyn) Barr, 104, of Manchester, Iowa, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester.
Kathryn was born on June 20, 1903, near Masonville, Iowa, the daughter of Emory Beal and Carrie Jane Bartlof Allyn. She attended grade school at Masonville and graduated from Manchester High School in the Normal Training Department in 1922. On February 21, 1923, Kathryn was united in marriage to Loren Thomas Barr at her home in Masonville. The couple attended the Sand Creek area church (Prairie Township) until it closed. In 1936, her family joined the United Methodist Church. She worked as a homemaker all her life. In 1952, the couple moved from their farm in Prairie Township to Manchester. Loren passed away on February 20, 1970. In 1993, Kathryn moved to Franklin Place Condo, and to the Good Neighbor Home in November 2003.
Kathryn was active in church activities and was Pat-Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Past-President of Phidelphian Club, Past-President of the Audubon Society, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Rebecca Circle, United Methodist Women, and MIADS in the Methodist Church.
Kathryn loved her family, friends, nature, animals, music, poetry, and playing the organ. She was best known for her delicious baking, especially cherry pie and angel food cake. Kathryn loved to crochet and made afghans for all of her grandchildren. She loved the color purple and enjoyed receiving purple balloons on her birthday, especially the many she received for her 100th birthday on June 20, 2003. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.
Kathryn is survived by a loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Genevieve and Walter Croskey, Manchester, a loving daughter-in-law, Eleanor Barr, Manchester, twelve grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Loren Barr; one son, Allyn Michael Barr in 1992, two brothers, Paul Allyn and Hugh Allyn in infancy; two sisters, Ennis Kennedy and Chloe Hand; and a great-grandson, Derek Moyer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to Camp Courageous or the Manchester United Methodist Church.
