Karen K. Lang, 63, of Cedar Rapids, died at home, Monday, May 4, 2009. Karen has deeded her body to the anatomy department of the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa to assist in developing the next generation of medical professionals and perhaps to help advance a specific area of medical research. A private family memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Inurnment: Green Cemetery in Morley at a later date.
Karen was born November 27, 1945, in Monticello, the daughter of Darrell and Evelyn Blayney. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1964 and attended St. Luke’s Nursing school thereafter. Karen married Larry Lang on December 31, 1966, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and a long term marriage that blended “deferred gratification” with “Live each day to the fullest” ensued. Karen completed her associate degree in nursing in 1978, at Clinton Community College and then spent the majority of her nursing career at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. She touched the lives of many people over the years and made this small corner of the world a little better place. If she passed through your life, you will remember her.
She also had a very special talent and love for sewing and knitting, especially for others. There are many garments being worn today with a tag inside which reads “Made especially for you by Karen”.
Karen is survived by her husband, Larry; daughters, Vanessa Miller and fiancé Dan Sandefur of Burlington and Bethany (Tad) Seiler of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Kathy (Richard) Lahmon of Tipton; five grandchildren, Daniel, Jesse, Wyatt, Dallas, and Evelyn; three sisters-in-law, Xiang Blayney of Atlanta, Georgia, Carolyn Lang of Tipton, and Karen (Doug) Price of Iowa City; a brother-in-law, Robert Lang of San Jose, California; an aunt, Eleanor Thomson of Stanwood; mother-in-law, Doris Lang of Tipton.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Mike and Sarah of Hanover, New Hampshire, Steve and Stella of Hong Kong, China, Jenny and Chad of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Will and Bhavna of North Liberty, James and Kim of Nichols, Michelle and Tony of Lone Tree, Mike and Lindsey of Walnut Creek, California; and scores of friends from a lifetime of being a friend.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Keith Blayney; a brother-in-law, John Lang; a niece Melony; and a nephew, Timothy.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Karen K. Lang Memorial Scholarship Fund for associate degree nursing students at Kirkwood Community College in care of the Kirkwood Foundation.
A special thanks and sincere appreciation to all the compassionate and caring individuals from Mercy Hospice who helped during Karen’s illness and as well, everyone at Dr. Pope’s office who also have been so caring and supportive.
