Judy McMahon learned at an early age the most important place in a home was the kitchen table. Born on March 1, 1941, in Coggon, Iowa to Joseph and Loretta Houlahan, she was taught this was the place where food was served, and familial bonds were formed. While attending school in Coggon and Ryan, she also learned it was a place to form friendships. She would spend evenings sharing recipes, laughing and hosting card club game nights.

On October 13, 1962, at St John’s Catholic Church in Coggon, she joined Ron McMahon as her lifelong dining partner. During their 57 years together, they realized the greatest power of the kitchen table - raising their own family. A lifetime of cooking led Judy to have her favorite recipes - Connie (Jon) Behnken, Julia McMahon, Patricia (Mike) Briggs, Jean McMahon, Bill (Maggie) McMahon, Mike (Julie) McMahon, Dan (Lori) McMahon, Coleen (Ryan) Meissner, Rich (Audrey) McMahon, Marjie (Kevin) Werner, Tim McMahon, Bob McMahon, Kelly McMahon and Kerry (Tim) Pasker. The devout Irish Catholic couple even had a favorite German dish - Andreas Wenzel. Each of her creations were sprinkled with the spices of life, including heaping amounts of love, laughter and encouragement with a pinch of sorrow and heartache. But the spice she relied on the most was “thyme.” Hours were spent with each dish celebrating life’s milestones and offering comfort when disappointment was center stage. As she got older the same care was devoted to her 27 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

On August 2, 2023, Judy McMahon stepped away from the kitchen to sit with Ron once again; her parents; her sister, Mary-Loretta (Jerry) Badger: and in-laws, Virginia (Bill) Drummy, Harold McMahon, Lorraine (Kenneth) Wickman, and Ray McMahon, to resume their conversations at their eternal table. She leaves behind her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brothers, Tom (Kathy) Houlahan, Pat Houlahan (Pam Swihart), Jim (Karen Klouda-Houlahan) Houlahan, and John (Nancy) Houlahan to gather and dine together. Judy is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Barb McMahon, and Rosemary McMahon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
