Juan Jose Hernandez, 90, of 1621 N Street S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, February 6, 2012, at his home. Services: 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2012, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Father Dennis Juhl. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Patricia Ann (Michael) Forbes, John Manuel (Lynette) Hernandez, Victor Raphael (Kenda) Hernandez, Robert James (Kim) Hernandez and David Raul (Tina) Hernandez; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; sister, Rosa Maria Topete; and son-in-law, Norward “Bob” Snell.
Juan was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter, Mary Martha Snell; and siblings, Rafael Estrada and Amparo Hernandez.
Born April 19, 1921, in Durango, Mexico, Juan was the son of Juan Pablo (Trevino) Hernandez and Rosa Estrada de Hernandez. During his college years, Juan played football. He married Carmen Gonzalez in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1947. Before moving to the United States he was a professor of mathematics and engineering at Poly Technic Institute in Mexico City. Juan was a District Land Surveyor for the IDOT.
Juan belonged to the Society of Land Surveyors and enjoyed working on cars, electronics, mathematics, watching pro football, especially the Green Bay Packers, boxing and the Hawkeyes. His greatest joy was his family, going out to eat and going to Mexico.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice.
