Joy Webster "Curly? Kerr, 90, of 2521 Southland Street SW, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002, in Mercy Hallmar , Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2002, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Stan Wierson. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2002 at the Funeral Home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery with military rites conducted by Hanford Post #5.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie; a son, Terry Kerr and wife Brenda of Marion; a daughter, Deborah Peyton and husband Rod of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Elsie Watson of Meriden, KS, and Mabel Hauetter of Merrit Island, FL., four grandchildren, Gina, Sara, Lukas and Holly Kerr all of Marion, whom he loved very much. He leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews, many of whom he attended their weddings. He was known as "Uncle Curly?.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Ray (infant), Ralph and George.
Joy was born October 1, 1911, in Otoe, NE. the son of David H. Kerr and Ida Mary "Edith? Paap Kerr. He moved to Rock Creek, KS as a youngster and graduated from Rock Creek High School. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1940-1945. He served with the 2nd Cavalry at Ft. Riley, KS, and the 9th Armored Division, 1848th Ordnance. He was a tank driver and tank mechanic. He was proud to serve his country and is listed in the Registry of Remembrances of the National World War II Memorial, Washington, DC. He married Fannie Lue Ewing on May 1, 1950, in Topeka, KS. He owned and operated service stations and did mechanic work in Rock Creek, Topeka and Wichita, KS; Denver, CO.; Great Falls, MT.; Decatur, AL.; and Cedar Rapids, IA.
Joy was a member of the Meriden Masonic Lodge #236, Kansas AF&AM for 54 years, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 10.
Joy enjoyed horseback riding with his daughter and teaching mechanics to both his son, Terry and daughter, Debbie. Boxing, Basketball, and baseball were his favorite sports, he was an avid Jayhawk and Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed gardening, and crossword puzzles. He was a real family man and will be missed by all.
Joy had been a dialysis patient the past 6 ? years. Through Mercy Dialysis, he was able to watch the grandchildren grow up. Thanks to a special group of dedicated doctors, nurses, staff, and technicians. Also the family wishes to give a special thanks to Zone 41 of Mercy Hospital for their care and concern throughout the years.
Memorials may be made/sent to the Mercy Dialysis Patient Services Fund, % Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids or to the donor?s choice. The family is also appreciative of Mercy Hallmar for the tender loving care he received.
