Joseph William O?Connor, 68, a resident of Springville, died Friday, January 30, 2004, in his home, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Mike Gray of Valley Baptist Church and Jim Sullivan. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Graveside services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in rural Masonville.
Surviving are his wife Wandalene, their children, Bev (Jim) LeGrand of Cedar Rapids, Trish Kopp (Scott Knotts) of Marion, DeAnna Ford (Jerry Meyers) of Covington, Bob (Sue) Ford of Marion, Marsha (Bob) Rowe of Cedar Rapids, Brenda Carmer (Mike Grimm) of Cedar Rapids, Jackie (Mark) Stewart of Lisbon and Wayne (Kim) Werderman of Lisbon; a sister, Marian (Woody) Evans of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Jerome (Irene) O?Connor of Cedar Rapids.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Randy, Christie, Steve, Richard, Paula, Stevie, Bobby, Craig, Laurie, Jami, Dekota, Dennis (Scooby), Michael, Shawn, Jennifer and Megan; step-grandchildren, Eric and Kenny; and thirty-three great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leon; a sister-in-law, Ruth Ann; two grandchildren, Stacy and Shane; his mother-in-law, Marietta Stepanek; a brother-in-law, Rex Simpson; and a niece, Eileen.
Joe was born the son of William and Kathryn McGuire O?Connor on March 5, 1935 in Winthrop. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On March 12, 1977, he was united in marriage to Wandalene Stepanek at St. Pious X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Joe was employed at ADM Corn Sweetners for many years. From 1971 to 1990 he owned and operated Hawkeye Pumping, later he worked for Lloyd?s Table in Lisbon and then for Brecke Construction. He retired in 2000.
Joe enjoyed fishing, camping, taking care of his family, birds and cats. He loved nature and reading. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 298.
A memorial fund has been established in Joe?s memory.
